Masonry Construction in Puerto Vallarta
Masonry — walls, blocks, brick, and stone — forms the bones of virtually every building in Puerto Vallarta. Mexican construction tradition is masonry-based: concrete block (tabique or block hueco) for structural walls, natural stone for facades and garden features, brick for detail work and fireplaces. PVR Contractors' masons are skilled in all these materials, delivering work that is structurally sound, thermally efficient, and visually excellent.
Masonry Services We Provide
Concrete Block Walls
Concrete hollow block (block hueco) in 10, 15, and 20 cm widths is the workhorse of Puerto Vallarta construction. We lay block with properly proportioned mortar (1 part cement: 3–4 parts sand with lime for workability), check for plumb and level every course, and fill structural cells with concrete and rebar as required by engineering plans. Bond beams (cadenas) at floor and roof levels tie masonry walls into the concrete frame for seismic resistance.
For exterior walls in properties near the coast, we recommend 15 or 20 cm block with solid-filled cells for better structural performance and moisture resistance. We also offer cellular concrete block (block celular) which provides superior thermal insulation — reducing interior temperatures and cutting AC energy costs by 15–25% compared to standard hollow block.
Natural Stone Masonry
Stone walls are a hallmark of Puerto Vallarta's most beautiful properties. We work with several local stone types:
- Piedra bola (river cobble): Rounded volcanic stones set in mortar — rustic, beautiful, and very Puerto Vallarta in character. Common for garden walls, water features, and accent facades.
- Cantera stone: A soft volcanic stone quarried in Jalisco. Easily carved for decorative elements — columns, arches, window surrounds, and fountain basins. The warm golden tone weathers beautifully in the tropical climate.
- Mampostería irregular: Irregular flat stone laid in courses for retaining walls and feature walls with a handcrafted, organic appearance.
- Cut stone cladding: Machine-cut stone tiles applied as a veneer to concrete block walls, providing the look of solid stone construction at lower cost and weight.
Brick Work
Red clay brick (tabique rojo) is used for interior partition walls, arched features, pizza ovens, and decorative accents. Exposed brick walls (ladrillo aparente) are increasingly popular in contemporary Puerto Vallarta interiors as an architectural feature. We also install refractory brick for fireplaces and outdoor grills.
Perimeter & Boundary Walls
Privacy and security walls are standard for Puerto Vallarta properties. We build perimeter walls in concrete block, brick, stone, or combinations — typically 2–2.5 meters height with proper footings. Adding glass bottle tops (vidrio de botella), rebar spikes, or electric fence integration provides additional security while maintaining aesthetic compatibility with the neighborhood.
Arches, Niches & Decorative Masonry
Mexican architecture is rich in decorative masonry details: arched doorways and windows, recessed niches (nichos) for art and religious icons, corbeled shelves, and ornate column capitals in cantera stone. Our craftsmen execute these traditional elements with skill — adding authentic regional character to properties that distinguish them from generic construction.
Thermal Comfort — Masonry in Puerto Vallarta's Climate
Building orientation, wall thickness, and material choice significantly affect indoor temperature. A 20 cm solid concrete block wall provides far more thermal mass than a 10 cm hollow block — absorbing daytime heat and releasing it slowly at night, moderating interior temperature swings. When combined with proper roof insulation and strategic window placement for cross-ventilation, well-designed masonry construction can reduce AC dependency dramatically.
We advise all clients on thermal performance during the design phase, coordinating with the architectural design team to optimize building orientation, shading elements, and wall assembly for Puerto Vallarta's climate.
Protecting Masonry from Puerto Vallarta's Environment
The combination of salt air, intense UV, heavy rainfall, and biological growth (algae, moss) attacks masonry aggressively in coastal Puerto Vallarta. Our protection strategy includes:
- Hydrophobic sealers applied to exterior masonry surfaces after plastering
- Proper drainage detailing at wall bases to prevent water pooling
- Quality cement mortars with adequate lime content for crack resistance
- Expansion joints at prescribed intervals to accommodate thermal movement without cracking
- Anti-efflorescence admixtures for below-grade and wet-area masonry
