Custom Metalwork & Blacksmithing in Puerto Vallarta
Iron and steel have shaped Puerto Vallarta's architectural identity for generations. The elaborate wrought iron gates of colonial haciendas, the decorative security bars (rejas) that characterize Centro's historic streets, the contemporary steel and glass railings of modern condominiums β all reflect a rich tradition of metalwork craftsmanship that remains vibrant and relevant today. PVR Contractors' metalwork division fabricates custom iron, steel, and stainless steel pieces for security, safety, and architectural expression throughout the Banderas Bay area.
We combine traditional blacksmithing techniques (forge welding, scrollwork, hand-hammering) with modern fabrication methods (MIG and TIG welding, plasma cutting, CNC bending) to produce pieces that range from ornate colonial ironwork to minimal contemporary steel designs β always matched to the property's architectural character.
Metalwork Services We Provide
Entry Gates β Security & First Impressions
Your entry gate is the first element visitors see and the primary security feature of your property. We fabricate custom gates in three main steel specifications:
- Traditional wrought iron style: Rolled steel sections with decorative scrolls, finials, and forged details. Classic Mexican colonial character. Heavy, substantial, and timeless.
- Contemporary flat bar: Clean, minimalist horizontal or vertical flat steel bars in geometric compositions. Popular in modern Puerto Vallarta architecture.
- Powder-coated tubular steel: Practical, cost-effective, and available in any color. Strong and durable with proper coating system.
All gates are designed for the specific opening width, weight, and swing clearance of your site. We incorporate automatic gate operators (swing arm or underground motors) with intercom, keypad, and remote control as standard for driveway gates β security and convenience combined.
Security Bars & Window Grilles (Rejas)
Decorative security bars are one of the defining architectural elements of Puerto Vallarta's residential properties. Done well, they add significant character while providing effective security. Done poorly, they look like prison bars. Our design approach creates rejas with:
- Artistic scrollwork, geometric patterns, or clean contemporary vertical bars that complement the building's style
- Proper rebar sizing (minimum 5/8" diameter) and anchor depth for structural effectiveness
- Emergency escape provisions β hinged security panels or break-away bars in sleeping areas as required by fire safety codes
- Proper corrosion protection β sandblast + zinc primer + polyurethane topcoat, or hot-dip galvanizing for coastal properties
Railings & Balustrades
Stair and balcony railings are both safety-critical and architecturally significant. We fabricate railings in several configurations:
- Traditional iron with scrollwork: Decorative vertical balusters with scrolled handrail β classic and elegant
- Horizontal cable rails: Stainless steel cables tensioned between steel posts β contemporary, minimal, and view-preserving
- Flat bar panel: Laser-cut or hand-fabricated steel panels as balustrade infill β can incorporate custom geometric patterns or natural motifs
- Combined steel and glass: Steel posts with tempered glass infill β see our glass systems page for details
Safety code requirements: minimum 90 cm height for balcony railings, 107 cm for stairs, maximum 10 cm opening between balusters. We design to these requirements as a minimum and can exceed them for elevated terrace railings where maximum security is desired.
Custom Iron Doors
A custom iron door makes an unmistakable statement at a property entry. We fabricate main entrance doors in heavy steel sections with decorative panels, cast iron accents, and integrated door furniture (handles, locks, knockers) in period or contemporary styles. Iron doors can be solid (providing weather and noise protection), partially glazed (combining iron character with glass panels for natural light), or full-glass panels in iron frames. All iron doors include multi-point locking systems for security.
Furniture & Decorative Ironwork
Custom iron furniture β dining tables, console tables, bed frames, canopy structures β adds authentic Mexican artisan character to interiors and exteriors. We fabricate:
- Dining and console table bases in hand-forged or welded steel, finished in black, bronze, or custom patina
- Chandeliers and pendant light frames in iron with wrought or cast details β coordinated with our lighting installation team
- Wall art, mirrors with iron frames, and decorative panels with traditional or contemporary motifs
- Garden furniture β benches, planters, and trellises in powder-coated steel for outdoor durability
Structural & Architectural Steel Elements
We fabricate and install structural steel elements that are both functional and exposed-to-view as architectural features: feature beams and lintels in raw or patinated steel, column bases and capitals in decorative steel plate, custom stairs as described in our steel structures page, and steel pergola frames for terrace shade structures.
Corrosion Protection in Puerto Vallarta's Coastal Environment
Steel without proper surface protection begins rusting in Puerto Vallarta within weeks of installation β salt air is far more corrosive than the inland humidity most metalworkers design for. Our standard protection protocol for all exterior metalwork:
- Sandblasting: SA 2.5 standard β removes all mill scale, rust, and contamination to near-white metal
- Zinc-rich epoxy primer: Applied within 4 hours of blasting before surface oxidation restarts. Provides cathodic protection of any microscopic voids in the topcoat.
- Polyurethane topcoat: UV-resistant, scratch-resistant finish in any color (most commonly flat black, hammered black, bronze, or custom colors)
For the highest-exposure marine installations (beachfront properties, ocean-spray zones): we specify hot-dip galvanizing as a base treatment before painting, providing 20β30 years of corrosion protection that ordinary paint alone cannot approach.
Annual touch-up maintenance (cleaning, inspection, and repainting any scratched or bare metal areas) is recommended for all coastal metalwork and extends protection life significantly.
