Hydraulic & Plumbing Installations in Puerto Vallarta
Puerto Vallarta's water infrastructure has characteristics that make local plumbing expertise essential. Municipal water pressure is inconsistent β excellent in some zones, barely reaching upper floors in others, and subject to seasonal rationing during dry months (JanuaryβMay). Water quality varies by neighborhood, with some areas having mineral-rich water that deposits scale rapidly in pipes and water heaters. And the hot, humid climate creates specific challenges for drainage systems, water heater sizing, and water treatment needs.
PVR Contractors' licensed plumbers design and install complete hydraulic systems for new construction and renovations, applying this regional knowledge to create systems that deliver consistent water pressure, efficient hot water, and reliable drainage throughout your Puerto Vallarta property.
Hydraulic Services We Provide
New Construction Plumbing β Complete Systems
For new construction, we design the complete hydraulic system before a single pipe is installed: supply line routing from cistern to all fixtures, hot water loop design, drainage and vent piping layout, and mechanical room planning for cistern, pump, water heater, and treatment equipment. Good system design prevents the common problem of inadequate pressure at upper-floor fixtures, water hammer noise, and slow-draining problems that are expensive to fix after walls and floors are finished.
All supply lines are run in PVC or CPVC conduit β not exposed β to allow future replacement without demolition. Drain and vent piping in schedule 40 PVC, properly sloped to code minimums (2% for horizontal drains). All fixtures have individual shut-off valves for servicing without disrupting the entire system.
Cistern & Pump Systems β Essential Puerto Vallarta Infrastructure
A properly designed cistern and pump system is the most important element of any Puerto Vallarta property's water infrastructure. Here's why it matters:
- Municipal water supply to hillside zones is frequently insufficient to directly supply upper floors β a cistern with a pump solves this permanently
- During dry season, SIAPA (the municipal water authority) implements rationing schedules β a properly sized cistern provides 7β10 days of storage autonomy
- Direct municipal pressure fluctuations can stress fixtures and water heater connections β a pump-regulated hydroneumatic system delivers constant, controlled pressure
We design and install underground cisterns (typically reinforced concrete, 3,000β15,000 liters for residential properties), rooftop tinaco tanks where gravity feed is acceptable, hydroneumatic pressure systems, automatic float valve controls, and overflow protection. Cistern sizing is based on fixture count, occupancy, and desired autonomy days.
Water Heaters β Options for Puerto Vallarta
Solar thermal water heaters (calentadores solares) are our top recommendation for Puerto Vallarta. With 300+ sunny days per year, a correctly sized solar system meets 75β90% of hot water demand with zero operating cost. Payback period is typically 2β3 years against propane costs. We install both direct-flow (evacuated tube) and flat-plate systems, properly sized for household demand.
Tankless gas water heaters (calentadores instantΓ‘neos de paso) are the standard backup or standalone system in Puerto Vallarta β providing hot water on demand without standby heat losses of a tank heater. Sizing for the number of simultaneous hot water uses is critical β an undersized unit won't maintain temperature when two showers run simultaneously.
Heat pump water heaters are an increasingly popular option for properties with solar panels β they use electrical heat pump technology (3Γ more efficient than electric resistance) to heat water using ambient air heat, eliminating propane dependency entirely.
Drain & Vent Systems
Proper drainage requires correct pipe sizing, adequate slope, and a complete vent stack system to allow air into the drain and prevent siphoning of trap water (which allows sewer gases into living spaces). This is an area where shortcuts create serious problems: slow drains, gurgling sounds, and sewage odors in kitchens and bathrooms that are expensive and disruptive to fix after finish work is complete.
We design all drainage to Mexico's NOM hydraulic standards, with inspection cleanouts at required intervals for future maintenance access. Connection to the municipal sewer (or septic system where required) is coordinated with SIAPA.
Water Treatment Systems
Puerto Vallarta's water has elevated mineral content (hardness) that causes scale buildup in pipes, water heaters, and fixtures. We install:
- Whole-house water softeners: Ion exchange systems that remove calcium and magnesium β dramatically extend water heater and appliance life, improve soap lathering, and reduce scale deposits on tile and glass
- Sediment and carbon filters: Pre-filtration for cistern water supply
- Reverse osmosis systems: Under-sink drinking water purification for crystal-clear potable water β essential for properties serving guests
- UV sterilization: For cistern systems where biological contamination is a concern
Pool & Spa Plumbing
Pool circulation, filtration, and heating systems are specialized hydraulic work requiring correct pump sizing, properly sloped drain lines (to allow complete draining for cleaning), and balance tank design for infinity pools. We coordinate pool plumbing with our concrete pool shell construction team, installing all drain, return, skimmer, and equipment connections before concrete enclosure.
Leak Detection & Repair
Slab leaks (leaking supply lines below the concrete floor) are common in Puerto Vallarta properties with aging galvanized pipe. Undetected, they cause structural damage, mold, and significant water waste. We use acoustic leak detection equipment and pressure testing to pinpoint leak locations precisely, minimizing demolition. In many cases, rerouting the line through walls rather than breaking the slab is the most cost-effective repair strategy.
